‘Picasso’s Paintbrush’ croton is a slow-growing plant that is relatively new on the scene.

This cultivar has long, very narrow leaves that resemble paintbrushes dipped in various colors of paint – colors and hues including green, orange, yellow, red, and even purple can be found on older growth.

As other crotons, ‘Picasso’s Paintbrush’ does best in well-drained soil, full sun to partial sun, and hot and humid areas. In areas with low light it will lose its color. Crotons, members of the Euphorbiaceae family, do exude a milky sap that can irritate some people’s skin and should be handled carefully.

Growing this plant:

Light Requirements: Croton plants prefer bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch their leaves, while too little light can lead to poor growth and dull foliage.

Watering Needs: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Croton plants are sensitive to overwatering and can develop root rot if left in soggy soil.

Soil Preferences: Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix of peat, perlite, and pine bark works well to provide the necessary drainage and nutrients.

Temperature and Humidity: Croton plants thrive in warm, humid environments. Ideal temperatures range from 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Maintain high humidity levels, ideally above 60%, by misting the leaves regularly or using a humidifier.

Plants stress during transit. It is normal for a plant to be a bit dehydrated, have slight tears in foliage, and/or drop a few leaves while it acclimates to your home.
